Boot space trips up more bookings than seat count. List travellers, cases and bulky extras such as golf clubs or a pushchair, then let the firm suggest what fits. State a preference for automatic or manual, and mention child seats or mobility aids at the outset rather than afterwards.

Give Your Dates, and Your Slack, Honestly

Work out whether you need the car for hours or days, then test that estimate against your real diary. Collection checks, refuelling and handback all take time beyond driving. If a later return seems possible, raise it while the booking is still forming; an early extension is usually routine.

Name Every Driver in the First Message

Firms release vehicles only to drivers recorded on the booking. Check the licence is in date, declare additional drivers honestly, and mention endorsements or a licence issued outside the UK early. Ask what documents each driver must bring and whether everyone should attend the handover in person.

Settle Money and Cover While Terms Are Open

Bundle your questions into the first exchange: standard insurance, how the excess works, how the deposit is held, mileage limits and late-return charges. Windscreens and personal belongings are often excluded, so presume nothing. Note each answer, since terms differ between companies and nothing is held in your name until booked.
