Give Both Ends of the Day a Margin

Traffic, queues and paperwork eat time. Allow half an hour at collection and the same at return. If you must be somewhere by ten, pick the car up at nine. A gap at the end matters too. Returning a car at a rush means a rushed inspection, and nobody benefits from that.

Raise the Possibility of a Late Return Early

Plans slip. A meal runs long, or a road closes. Say so before you drive off. Mention the chance of returning the car an hour or two after the agreed time. Some suppliers will accommodate it; whether an after-hours return is possible at a given branch depends on staffing and arrangements, so ask when you enquire rather than on the day.

Prepare for the Handover Before the Day Arrives

Know what you will bring: licence, card, booking reference. Read the fuel and mileage expectations in advance. Walk around the car with the agent and photograph any marks you spot. Doing this calmly on the day is easier when nothing about the paperwork surprises you at the desk.
