Describe the Itinerary, Not the Car

Opening with a make and model wastes the chance to be useful. Instead, map out every stop your trip involves, how long each leg runs and who is in the car at each stage. Long stretches between stops suit a different vehicle from a day of short hops, and saying so plainly helps the hire team match you well.

Count Passengers and Luggage Separately

Seats fill faster than boots, so run two tallies. List everyone travelling, including anyone joining midway, then measure every case, bag and pushchair at its honest size rather than a flattering guess. Name any long or awkward item outright. Squeezing five people plus their kit into the wrong car turns a multi-stop trip into a miserable one.

Set Honest Timings and Ask About Extensions Early

Multi-stop days rarely run to schedule, and the leanest allowance is the stage that overruns. Fix your collection and return hours against your real diary, not an optimistic one, remembering paperwork, loading and refuelling either side of the driving. If an extra day looks likely, raise it while the booking is still forming — extensions are far easier to add then.

Ask what insurance comes as standard, how large the excess stands, and how windscreen and tyre damage are treated, since these often fall outside normal terms. Add mileage limits, the fuel arrangement and the deposit, and treat nothing as included unless it is written down plainly.
