Settle the Driver Line-Up First

Decide who drives before you contact anyone. List every likely name, not just the main one. Check each licence is valid and find the physical copy. Declare anything a firm would want to know, such as penalty points. Adding a driver later means fresh checks. Ask what each person brings to handover.

Put the Money and Cover Questions in Writing

Ask about charges early. What insurance travels with the truck? How large is the excess? How is the deposit held and returned? What does the mileage allowance actually buy? Count nothing as included unless it is written plainly. Windscreens, tyres and cargo often sit outside standard cover.

Describe the Load and Access Honestly

Describe the job, not a make of truck. On a moving day, measure the furniture and the box stacks at their true size. Note anything heavy, tall or awkward. Say whether there are steps, narrow lanes or awkward parking at either end. Hand the firm your figures. Let them recommend the size.

Let the Dates Frame the Plan

Fix your dates. Attach a collection hour and a return hour you can genuinely keep. Both take longer than a diary entry suggests. There is travel, paperwork, an inspection and loading at each end. Work backwards from any fixed start time. Ask in writing what happens if a return slips.
