Fix the Hours Before the Truck

Driving time is the smallest part of the day. Travel, inspection, loading, both runs, unloading and paperwork all eat into the hours. Build collection and return times around that and ask for them in writing. Which trucks are free on your dates becomes clear only once a booking is made.

Get the Handover Paperwork Straight

Describe the Job, Not the Model

Take a customer who must move a mix of luggage and passengers in one go. The useful detail is not a size label but the picture: bags, people, what needs securing. Give the hire firm that account and let them match the truck, mentioning any equipment you cannot manage without.

Put Money and Cover on the Table Early

Insurance questions feel awkward at a counter with a day's work behind you. Ask earlier, in writing: what cover comes with the truck, how large the excess runs, how the deposit is held, and what mileage and fuel terms apply. Assume your own goods travel uninsured unless told otherwise.
