Let the Job Choose the Vehicle, Not the Other Way Round

Start with the awkward object itself. Measure its length, height and weight, then picture it loaded: will it stand upright or lie flat, and does it need a tail lift because nobody can lift it by hand? A sofa or a chest freezer might fit a smaller truck, but a fragile antique may deserve extra floor space and strapping points.

Put the Charges and Cover Questions in the First Message

When you enquire, ask straight away what the quoted figure covers and what sits outside it. Query the mileage allowance, fuel expectations and any damage excess. Request the terms in writing so you can compare quotes sensibly. Getting these answers early prevents a surprise on collection day when you simply want to load up and go.

Decide who is actually driving before you contact anyone. Check that their licence covers the size of truck you have in mind and note how long they have held it, since some firms apply minimum-age or experience rules. If two people will share the driving, mention both from the start rather than springing a second name later.

Count the Whole Day Before You Name Any Hours

Think through every stage, not just the drive. Wrapping and manoeuvring one bulky item can eat an hour on its own, and stairs or narrow gates add more. Allow for traffic, a fuel stop and unloading at the far end. What looked like a two-hour errand often needs half a day booked to stay comfortable.
