Pin Down the Hours Before Anything Else

Work backwards from your loading time, not your deadline. If the truck must be back by four o'clock, allow for a slow morning, a longer route than planned and an unplanned coffee stop. One customer moving pallets of feed realised too late that a two-hour window left no room for a stuck gate. Booking a generous block costs less than rushing.

Give Both Handovers the Attention They Deserves

At pickup, walk around the truck with the hire staff and photograph anything already marked, scuffed or dented. Do exactly the same on return, even when you're tired and keen to leave. A five-minute check at each end protects you from disputes later. It also gives you a chance to ask about quirks such as a stiff gear change.

Describe the Load as It Truly Is

Guessing the weight or dimensions of your load rarely ends well. Measure the bulky items, weigh what you can, and be honest about anything awkward such as long scaffolding poles or a top-heavy generator. The right truck depends on real numbers, not optimistic ones. A vehicle that's slightly too small turns one trip into three expensive ones.

Have the Driver List Ready From the Outset

Decide upfront who will actually drive the truck, and confirm their licence details before you enquire. Adding a second driver later can hold things up on the day, and some hirers may not be able to accommodate a change at short notice. If a mate is helping with the driving, get his licence sorted early rather than at the counter.
