Start with the Route, Not the Load

Access decides more hires than cargo does. A truck that swallows everything but cannot reach the drop-off point helps nobody. Note height barriers, narrow lanes, weight limits, tight gateways and soft ground at both ends. Where one site is cramped, a smaller body often proves the wiser choice simply because it can get close enough to unload properly.

Describe Your Load Honestly

Give the hire team a plain account of what must travel: pallets, furniture, materials or bulky equipment, with an honest estimate of combined weight and volume. Allow for extra items joining the job late. Note anything long, wide or tall, plus how it will be loaded and whether straps, shelter or a tail lift are genuinely needed.

Settle the Driving Question Early

Licence requirements differ between trucks, so your vehicle choice partly decides who may drive it. Only drivers named on the agreement can take the wheel. If a colleague might share the driving or handle the return, add them at the enquiry stage, since additional drivers normally need registering and checking beforehand. Dig out licences early and declare anything unusual upfront.

Ask About Timing, Costs and Cover Together

Raise handover hours, deposits, mileage allowances, insurance and excess in your first message, not after a slot is booked. The hire hours cover only the time the truck spends in your hands; travel, paperwork and loading all eat into your own day. Ask whether cover extends to goods carried, and request the full document checklist well ahead.
