Settle Your Dates First

Fix your start and end dates before discussing anything else. If you need an early collection—say you're loading a fridge before work—ask whether the site opens that early and whether collecting the night before makes more sense. Weekend dates get busy, so give yourself a spare day.

Be Upfront About Who's Driving

Tell the hire firm who will drive and what their licence looks like. A twenty-two-year-old with a licence held for two years faces different conditions from someone with twenty years behind the wheel, and hiding the difference slows things down. Mention points, endorsements and any second driver at the outset.

Give the Route and the Load Together

Describe where the van starts and finishes its journey and what goes inside it. A run between two local houses differs greatly from a one-way drop elsewhere, and so does the pricing. Give the load's size, so the firm can match you to a sensible vehicle.

Get Every Cost in Writing

Ask for the full cost picture by email rather than trusting a phone quote. Mileage allowances, fuel arrangements, one-way fees and any charges for an extra driver all belong in the total. A written breakdown also gives you something to point at if the bill arrives higher than you expected.
