Check the Van Over Before You Drive Off

Collection deserves a few unhurried minutes. Walk round with a member of staff. Get every mark on the bodywork written into the agreement. Note the fuel level and the condition expected back home. Test the lights, tyres and mirrors yourself. At return, bring the van back on time and flag any damage straight away.

Sort Licence and Cover Questions Early

No firm will book without licence details, so keep them within reach. Ask what identification, proof of address and deposit the depot expects. Endorsements or an overseas licence should be raised while the booking forms. Ask what the insurance covers, how large the excess runs and whether anything can reduce it.

Draw up the inventory first. List everything, including awkward pieces that refuse to stack. Measure anything long or tall rather than guessing. Head your message with the dates wanted and the hire length. Count the whole job, not just driving: depot travel, loading, unloading and handback. Round your estimate upwards. If a second day looks possible, say so at the start. Weekends and month-ends get busy, though particular vans cannot be promised until the booking is made.
