Start With the Driver and Every Address on the Job

Name your driver before anything else, because a second driver changes both the terms and the cost. Then list every stop on the route, however small, and note who will be at each one. A customer collecting furniture for three relatives might discover only at the second address that nobody can help lift, adding twenty minutes nobody allowed for.

Work Out the Hours Before You State Them

Estimate the full span of the day, not just the driving. Loading takes longer than people expect, and so does returning an empty van. If a mover estimates four hours but the lift to a first-floor flat runs long, the hire period may lapse mid-job. Give yourself a buffer of an hour, since particular vans may not be free if you ask to extend on the day.

Let the Cargo Choose the Vehicle

Measure the largest item rather than guessing by eye. A wardrobe that stands two metres tall decides the model on its own. Think about awkward loads too: a customer shifting a rolled carpet needs length, while one carrying boxed house clearances needs floor space and a load height they can lift over. Pick the van around the cargo, never the reverse.

Raise the Documents During the Booking, Not at the Counter

Ask the provider at the point of booking exactly which paperwork they expect, then gather it that evening. Photocard licences, a second proof of address or a card in the driver's own name are common asks, and hunting for them on a busy morning wastes the time you saved elsewhere. A ten-minute call beforehand settles the whole question.
